* UCEMS helps initate new field cooling protocol
In May of 2008, representatives of UCEMS attended a medical control meeting of SC DHEC-EMS to request permission to begin a pilot project on field therapeutic hypothermia for the management of cardiac arrest patients. The request was successful and the committee approved the protocol for statewide use pending a final draft. In August, the protocol was distributed statewide for adaptation into protocols. UCEMS formed a training program for its paramedics and ordered the necessary cooling system. The treatment should be available to patients in Union in September.
